Marriage! Everyone knows what a marriage is. Or so we thought. The tradition of marriage—the foundation of our society– has taken a huge blow in California with the legalization of same-sex marriage in June.
After the passage of Proposition 22 in 2000 we all thought the marriage debate was over, but we now find ourselves gearing up for a new battle this November.
After watching activist judges and liberal lawmakers chip away at Proposition 22 it is apparent that the only way to protect marriage is to pass an Amendment to the state Constitution.
We will have that opportunity in November when Californians will vote on Proposition 8—amending our state constitution to read that, “Only marriage between a man and a woman may be valid or recognized in California.”
Though Proposition 22 passed easily in 2000 with 61% of the vote, this time it will take all of our efforts to pass Prop 8. Current poll numbers indicate that less than half of the voters are planning to vote yes.
Making the effort more difficult, State Attorney General Jerry Brown, changed the ballot title to a new biased description of "eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry,"
United Families California is joining with the Protect Marriage Coalition to help pass Proposition 8. We believe the united efforts of this coalition will again bring another successful outcome to this latest marriage battle.
This proposition is very important for our nation because what happens in California may not stay in California. The same-sex unions that are created in California may be recognized in other states.
The nation’s eyes are watching this pivotal battle for the tradition of marriage. Everyone’s help is needed. We urge you to support the Protect Marriage Coalition. Money is urgently needed to fund this campaign. We all need to get involved.
